ケニー・バレル（Kenny Burrell 出生名：Kenneth Earl Burrell 1931年7月31日～）はアメリカ合衆国ミシガン州デトロイト市生まれのジャズ・ギタリスト、作曲者、教育者。
彼のギターを語るなら、まず外せないのが濃密なブルース・フィーリング。チャーリー・クリスチャンやＴ・ボーン・ウォーカーらから受け継いだブルースの感覚をジャズの中に巧みに溶け込ませ、派手に弾きまくるのではなく、一音一音に深い味わいを持たせる独自のスタイルを築いた。まさに「音数よりも、音の旨味」で勝負するギタリスト。
オルガン・ジャズの巨人ジミー・スミスとの共演でも、その魅力を存分に発揮。「Organ Grinder Swing」などのアルバムでは、バレルの渋いギターとスミスの豪快なオルガンが絶妙に絡み合い、ソウル・ジャズ、ファンキー・ジャズの黄金期を飾った。
キャリアの後半で存在感を増していったのが、教育者としての顔。長年にわたりUCLAでジャズ教育に携わり、後進の育成に尽力。とりわけデューク・エリントンの音楽を深く研究し、その魅力を次世代へ伝える役割を果たしたした。

Kenny Burrell (born Kenneth Earl Burrell, July 31, 1931–) is a jazz guitarist, composer, and educator born in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
When discussing his guitar playing, one cannot overlook his rich blues feeling. He skillfully blended the blues sensibility he inherited from Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker into jazz, establishing a unique style that emphasizes the deep flavor of each individual note rather than flashy virtuosity. He is truly a guitarist who wins over listeners with “the richness of the sound rather than the number of notes.”
He also fully showcased his appeal in collaborations with Jimmy Smith, the giant of organ jazz. On albums such as *Organ Grinder Swing*, Barrel’s mellow guitar and Smith’s bold organ intertwined exquisitely, marking the golden age of soul jazz and funky jazz.
In the latter half of his career, his role as an educator became increasingly prominent. For many years, he was involved in jazz education at UCLA, devoting himself to nurturing the next generation. In particular, he conducted in-depth research into the music of Duke Ellington and played a key role in passing on its appeal to future generations.
He was not just a musician who “played and was done”; he was someone who passed on the jazz tradition he had cultivated to the next generation. Kenny Barrel was not only a guitarist but also a man who protected and nurtured the very essence of jazz itself.

それにしても驚かされるのが、この完成度の高さ。何しろファースト・アルバムなのだから、「新人だから少々荒削り」なんて言い訳は一切なし。最初から堂々たる演奏。
ケニー・バレルは大学で音楽を学んだ後、１９５１年にディジー・ガレスピー楽団へ入団。これが初レコーディング・デビューとされている。その後、１９５５年にニューヨークへ進出すると、ブルーノートのプロデューサー、アルフレッド・ライオンの目に留まる。
そして、この豪華メンバーによるデビュー作へ。若きバレルの才能が、単なる「新人ギタリストの登場」ではなく、すでに一流ミュージシャンとしての風格を備えていたことが、この演奏を聴けばよく分かる。

The LP was recorded on May 29, 1956; it was released by Blue Note (catalog number 1523) and contains seven tracks.
The CD was released by Toshiba EMI Co., Ltd. It features the original English liner notes by Leonard Feather, a Japanese translation of the liner notes by Ryoichi Sato, a Japanese commentary by Atsushi Ueda, and seven tracks. It is his debut album.
The lineup featured Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Candido on congas. It was truly a star-studded lineup, bringing together the top talents representing the jazz world of that era.
Backed by such a powerful ensemble, Kenny Burrell’s bluesy guitar playing shines with remarkable clarity and feeling. It’s not the kind of playing that relies on sheer force; every single note carries a hint of the blues, and when combined with the refined backing from Tommy Flanagan and the others, the entire performance takes on a much tighter, more cohesive quality.
What’s truly astonishing, though, is the high level of polish. Considering this is his debut album, there’s absolutely no excuse along the lines of “he’s a newcomer, so it’s a bit rough around the edges.” It’s a commanding performance right from the start.
After studying music in college, Kenny Barrel joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band in 1951. This is considered his recording debut. Later, when he moved to New York in 1955, he caught the eye of Blue Note producer Alfred Lion.
This led to his debut album, featuring this stellar lineup. Listening to this performance makes it clear that the young Barrel’s talent was not merely the “arrival of a new guitarist,” but that he already possessed the poise of a first-rate musician.

音楽もジャケットも一級品。５０年代ブルーノートの魅力が、ぎゅっと詰まった一枚。

Just imagining this music blaring at full volume in a smoke-filled café makes it seem cool in and of itself.
And it’s not just the music—the album cover is equally striking. The illustration was created by Andy Warhol, who would later become a master of Pop Art. Incidentally, “Volume 1” is blue, while “Volume 2” is purple. When you line up these two different-colored covers side by side, they really stand out on any record shelf.
Both the music and the cover are top-notch. This album is packed with the essence of 1950s Blue Note.

ところが、その只中にいるケニー・バレルは、まるで我関せず。周囲がどれだけ熱くなろうとも、涼しい顔で淡々とギターを弾き続ける。この「熱狂の中のクールさ」が、実に憎い。
この絶妙なバランスこそ、ブルーノートを率いたアルフレッド・ライオンが求めていた音だったのだろう。熱くなりすぎず、冷たくもない。個性の強いミュージシャンたちが、それぞれの持ち味を存分に発揮しながら、一枚の作品として見事にまとまっている。
しかもこの時期のブルーノートは、次々と強力な新作を送り出し、その多くが名盤として現在まで残っている。まさにアルフレッド・ライオンの絶頂期。

Yet Kenny Barrel, right in the thick of it, seems completely unfazed. No matter how heated the atmosphere around him gets, he continues to play his guitar calmly and matter-of-factly. This “coolness amid the frenzy” is truly irresistible.
This exquisite balance was likely exactly the sound that Alfred Lion, the head of Blue Note, was seeking. Not too hot, yet not too cold. Musicians with strong individual styles fully showcase their unique qualities, yet the album comes together beautifully as a cohesive whole.
Moreover, Blue Note during this period released one powerful new album after another, many of which remain classics to this day. It was truly the heyday of Alfred Lion.
The fiery Blakey, the understated Brooks, and the nonchalant Barrel—the contrast between these three makes this an irresistible album.

The LP was recorded on September 16 and 17, 1959; it was released by Argo as LP No. 655 and contains eight tracks.
The CD is released by CHESS; it is an import edition featuring the original English liner notes by Don Gold, a Japanese commentary by him, and two additional tracks (tracks 5 and 6), for a total of 10 tracks. It features a live performance at the Village Vanguard in New York.
The members are Kenny Burrell on guitar, Richard Davis on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums.
The lineup is a simple trio consisting only of guitar, bass, and drums. However, the sound is anything but simple. Rather than one of them taking on the role of accompanist, each takes center stage and weaves together with the others with complete freedom. ところが、そんな音楽とは対照的に、ジャケットはというと……これがまた、まったくジャズっぽくない（笑）。音は洒落ているのに、ジャケットは別世界。このちょっとしたミスマッチも、CDコレクションの楽しさの一つ。

A tribute album by Kenny Burrell dedicated to jazz guitar pioneer Charlie Christian. It features repertoire from Christian’s time with the Benny Goodman Sextet in the early 1940s.
Another highlight of this album is the collaboration among this truly distinguished lineup of musicians. Kenny Burrell on guitar, Richard Wyans on piano, Mike Mainieri on vibraphone, Phil Woods on alto saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. When listening to jazz collections, you occasionally come across surprising combinations that make you think, “These musicians were actually playing together?!”—and this album is the perfect example of that very thrill.
What’s more, Barrel—the star of the show—doesn’t bring his usual hard-bop sharpness to the forefront. Instead, he tones it down a bit, delivering a chic, sophisticated, and laid-back guitar sound. Rather than making a flashy statement, it feels like stylish background music that might quietly play on a street corner at night. Each of these understated musicians does a truly excellent job.
However, in stark contrast to the music, the album cover… well, it’s not jazz-like at all (laughs). The music is stylish, but the cover is from a completely different world. This slight mismatch is part of the fun of building a CD collection.
