ペッパー・アダムス（Pepper Adams 出生名：Park Frederick Adams III 1930年10月8日～1986年9月10日）は、アメリカ合衆国ミシガン州ハイランドパーク出身のジャズ・バリトン・サックス奏者。
大型で重厚な楽器のバリトン・サックスを、まるでアルトやテナー・サックスのように、高速かつアグレッシブに吹きこなした。
当時の主流だった、ジェリー・マリガン派による軽やかでクールなバリトン奏法とは一線を画し、キレ味鋭くパワフルなプレイスタイルを創り出した。

【Biography】
Pepper Adams (born Park Frederick Adams III; October 8, 1930 – September 10, 1986) was a jazz baritone saxophonist from Highland Park, Michigan, United States.
He played the baritone saxophone—a large, substantial instrument—with the same speed and aggressiveness as he would an alto or tenor saxophone. Setting himself apart from the light, cool baritone style of the Jerry Mulligan school, which was dominant at the time, he created a sharp and powerful playing style.

ＬＰは１９５７年７月１０日の録音、発売元がモード・レコード（Mode Records）MOD LP #112番、５曲入り、ファースト・アルバム。
ＣＤは発売元株式会社がトイズファクトリィレコード、販売元が株式会社バップ、ジョー・クイン（Joe Quinn）氏による英語オリジナル・ライナーノーツ、小川隆夫氏によるライナーノーツ和訳、久保田高司氏による日本語解説、５曲入り。
メンバーは、バリトンサックスがペッパー・アダムズ、ピアノがカール・パーキンス、トランペットがステュ・ウィリアムソン、ベースがリロイ・ヴィネガー、ドラムがメル・ルイス。
演奏は、溌剌（はつらつ）としたハード・バップ。
当時のジャズメンに言える事だがファースト・アルバムと言えども、すでに完成されている。
本来、バリトン・サックスはビックバンドの低音を担（にな）う楽器だった。
先駆者はデューク・エリントン楽団に長く在籍したハリー・カーネイ（Harry Carney）。
この楽器をフロントでメロディを奏でる楽器していきた先駆者の一人がペッパー・アダムス。
本アルバムのもう一つの価値は「モード・レコード（Mode Records）」。
１９５７年ハリウッドで設立さし３０タイトルを残し僅か１年で消滅したレーベル。
ありがたい時代で今では殆どがＣＤ化され簡単に入手できる様になった。
おなじみのの「エヴァ・ダイアナ」の絵で統一され、ジャズ・ファン必聴のシリーズとされている。

と言う事でアルバム・タイトル「Pepper Adams Jazzmen Detroit」の意味が鮮明になる。
演奏は、黒人まさりの粋で張りのあるバリトン・サックス。
繰り返すが、デトロイト生まれのジャズメンはトミー・フラナガン、ケニー・バレル、ミルト・ジャクソン、ドナルド・バード、カーティス・フラー、ルイ・ヘイズなどソウル界ではモータウン・レーベルの本拠地、スモーキー・ロビンソン、ダイアナ・ロスと枚挙にいとまがない。

こうなると、録音状態は良くない事などは、二の次。

When you listen to it at high volume, it feels as if you’re right there at the Five Spot Café on April 15, 1958.
The clatter of dishes, the chatter of the patrons, the echoes off the walls and ceiling, and the out-of-tune piano—all of these blend together to amplify the sense of being right there.
Whether you like this album or not is the litmus test for whether you’re truly a fan of funky jazz.
When it comes to this, the fact that the recording quality isn’t great becomes a secondary concern.
