【略歴】
デクスター・ゴードン（Dexter Gordon 1923年2月27日～1990年4月25日）は、アメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルス生まれのジャズ・テナーサックス奏者。
１９４０年頃からプロとして活動開始。
１９５０年代後半、麻薬で活動を棒に振る、凄いのは克服して１９６０年頃活動再開する。
１９６２年の暮れ 活動拠点をヨーロッパに移す。
１９７６年、アメリカに戻るまでの間、帰国した際にライブ、スタジオの演奏を残した。
１９８５年、デクスター・ゴードン主演の映画 ｢Round Midnight｣ は身長１９８cmの大男・デクスター・ゴードンを身近に感じる事ができる。

【Biography】
Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was a jazz tenor saxophonist born in Los Angeles, California, United States.
He began his professional career around 1940.
In the late 1950s, he derailed his career due to drug addiction, but remarkably overcame it and resumed performing around 1960.
In late 1962, he moved his base of operations to Europe.
Until his return to the United States in 1976, he recorded live and studio performances whenever he visited home.
In 1985, the film *Round Midnight*, starring Dexter Gordon, allowed audiences to get a close-up look at the towering figure—Dexter Gordon, who stood 198 cm tall.

１～３曲目、１９４８年の録音、テナーサックスがデクスター・ゴードン、ピアノがタッド・ダメロン、バリトン・サックスがレオ・パーカー、ベースがカーリー・ラッセル、ドラムがアート・ブレイキー。
演奏は、１９４０年代のものだが、古さをまったく感じさせない、むしろ、聴くたびに新鮮な魅力が感じられる。
デクスター・ゴードンは１９９０年に惜しくも亡くなった。
映画「Round Midnight」で主演を務めた際の強烈な印象が残っているため、今でも元気にどこかでテナー・サックスを吹いているような気がしてならない。
本作は、初リーダー作とされているが、すでに豪放なテナー・サウンドと、彼の持ち味であるセンチメンタルな歌心が完成されている。
さらに、共演者の顔ぶれも実に豪華だ。
バド・パウエル、タッド・ダメロン、アート・ブレイキー、レオ・パーカー、サディック・ハキム――この一流ミュージシャンたちの演奏を聴けるだけでも、本作には十分な価値がある。

アメリカ人ではないアルフレッド・ライオンだからこそ感じ取れたものがあったのだろう。そんな思いを、言葉ではなく行動で示した一枚である。

This is how this group came together.
They were warmly welcomed in Europe, where racial prejudice was less prevalent, and this led to their relaxed and uninhibited performance.
When you think about it, the reality is that the United States—the birthplace of jazz—had become a stifling and, before long, uncomfortable place for them.
And we must not forget the passion of Alfred Lion, the German owner of Blue Note Records, who made this extraordinary recording tour in Europe possible.
Perhaps it was precisely because Alfred Lion was not American that he was able to perceive certain things. This album is a testament to those sentiments, expressed not through words but through action.

そして、いきなり出てくるのがこの音――「音、黒っ！」。
やっぱりゴードンは、アメリカの空気を吸うとこうなるのか。
演目は、デクスター・ゴードン作曲の１曲を除けば、すべてスタンダード。
なかでも「Manhã de Carnaval（黒いオルフェ）」が面白い。おおらかで大らか、肩の力が抜けたデクスター・ゴードン流のボサノヴァで、これが実に気持ちいい。

This recording was made when the U.S. welcomed Dexter Gordon back from a temporary stay in Europe as if to say, “We’ve been waiting for you!”
And right off the bat, this sound emerges—“The sound is so dark!”
So, does Gordon really turn out like this when he breathes the American air?
The set list consists entirely of standards, with the exception of one song composed by Dexter Gordon.
“Manhã de Carnaval” (“Black Orpheus”) is particularly interesting. It’s a laid-back, easygoing, and relaxed take on bossa nova in the Dexter Gordon style—and it feels absolutely wonderful.

そして、どんな環境でも変わらない、デクスター・ゴードンの個性あふれる野太いテナーが、この演奏を強烈に引き締めている。
ＬＰはドイツに本拠を置く「ＭＰＳレコード」からのリリースだったため、当時は入手が難しかった。
ジャズ喫茶全盛の頃、このアルバムが掛かると、それまでざわついていた店内がスッと静まり返り、客が一斉に耳を傾けたものだ、そんな光景を今でも思い出す。
かつては幻の一枚だったが、今ではＣＤ化され、気軽に聴けるようになったのが嬉しい。

Since the LP was released by the Germany-based label “MPS Records,” it was difficult to obtain at the time.
I still remember the scene from the heyday of jazz cafés: whenever this album came on, the previously bustling room would instantly fall silent, and the customers would all listen intently.
It used to be a rare, hard-to-find record, but I’m delighted that it has now been released on CD and is easily accessible.

本作は、プレスティッジ・レーベルへの初レコーディングということもあり、ブルーノート時代とはまた違った雰囲気が楽しめる。
１曲目の「Montmartre」では、同じテナー奏者のジェームス・ムーディと共演。二人の演奏は、腕を競い合うバトルというより、互いを認め合うリスペクトのぶつかり合いだ。
そして、特筆したいのが４曲目の「Those Were the Days」、なんと、メリー・ホプキンスの大ヒット曲、邦題「悲しき天使」を取り上げている。
「えっ、この曲を？」と思わせる意外な選曲を、デクスター・ゴードンは見事に自分の音楽へ引き寄せ、いつもの「デクスター・ゴードン節」に料理してしまう。
リズム隊も、個人的に大好きなバリー・ハリス、バスター・ウィリアムス、アルバート・ヒースという強力な顔ぶれ。
これだけ揃って、どこに不満があろうか。
まさに、デクスター・ゴードンが聴かせるジャズの真髄である。

After that, he repeatedly returned to the United States to perform live and record, then went back to Europe, continuing this cycle.
Since this was his first recording for the Prestige label, it offers a different atmosphere from his Blue Note era.
On the first track, “Montmartre,” he performs alongside fellow tenor saxophonist James Moody. Their performance is less a battle to outdo one another and more a clash of mutual respect.
Also worth noting is the fourth track, “Those Were the Days”—believe it or not, a cover of Mary Hopkins’s smash hit, known in Japan as “Sad Angel.”
Dexter Gordon masterfully takes this surprising choice—one that makes you think, “Wait, this song?”—and weaves it into his own musical style, transforming it into his signature “Dexter Gordon sound.”
The rhythm section also features a powerhouse lineup of musicians I personally love: Barry Harris, Buster Williams, and Albert Heath.
With a lineup like this, what’s there to complain about?
This is truly the essence of jazz as presented by Dexter Gordon.

１８４０年頃からプロとして活動を始めたデクスター・ゴードンだが、１９５０年代後半、薬物に手を染めたことで、そのキャリアを大きく狂わせてしまう。
当時、薬物とジャズ・ミュージシャンは切っても切れない関係にあり、何人もの実力派ミュージシャンが、演奏活動すら続けられない状態に追い込まれていった。
しかし、デクスター・ゴードンはそこから立ち直り、１９６０年頃には再び音楽活動を開始する。これは、決して簡単なことではなかったはずだ。
その後、ヨーロッパへ活動の場を移し、１９７６年にはアメリカへ戻る。
本作で本人が演奏するのは９曲中４曲にとどまるが、そのテナーには、長い人生の喜びや苦悩が滲んでいる。まるで寂しさを紛らわせるかのような「泣きのテナー」には、思わず鳥肌が立つ。

The CD version of the film “Round Midnight,” starring Dexter Gordon.
Dexter Gordon began his professional career around 1840, but in the late 1950s, his involvement with drugs severely derailed his career.
At that time, drugs and jazz musicians were inextricably linked, and many talented musicians were driven to a state where they could no longer even continue performing.
However, Dexter Gordon managed to recover and resumed his musical career around 1960. This certainly could not have been an easy feat.
He later shifted his focus to Europe before returning to the United States in 1976.
Although he performs on only four of the nine tracks on this album, his tenor saxophone playing is imbued with the joys and sorrows of his long life. His “weeping tenor”—as if meant to drown out his loneliness—is so moving it gives you goosebumps.
