【略歴】
グローヴァー・ワシントン・ジュニア（Grover Washington, Jr. 1943年12月12日～1999年12月17日）は、アメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州バッファロー生まれのジャズ、フュージョン・サックス奏者、作曲家。
クリード・テイラーの「Kuduレーベル」で録音予定だった、ハンク・クロフォードが参加できなくなり、トラで入って出来上がったのが「Inner City Blues」、これがヒットし、一気に注目される。
アルト、テナー、ソプラノ、バリトンを器用に吹き分け、独特の奏法は、Ｒ＆Ｂ、ソウル・ジャズを土台にしながら「スムース・ジャズ」の、魁（さきがけ）となるサウンドを牽引した。

【Biography】
Grover Washington, Jr. (December 12, 1943 – December 17, 1999) was a jazz and fusion saxophonist and composer born in Buffalo, New York, United States.
Hank Crawford was originally scheduled to appear on a recording for Creed Taylor’s “Kudu Label,” but when he was unable to participate, Tora stepped in to complete the track, resulting in “Inner City Blues.” The song became a hit, instantly bringing him into the spotlight.
He skillfully switched between alto, tenor, soprano, and baritone saxophones, and his unique playing style—rooted in R&B and soul jazz—helped pioneer the sound that would become known as “smooth jazz.”

ジャズを基調にロックやラテン、電子音楽、時にはクラシックなどが融合したもので、マンネリ化していた耳に、当時、新鮮さを感じた。
メインストリーム・ジャズのミュージシャンの中でもいち早く、この潮流に乗ったのが、グローヴァー・ワシントン・ジュニアだった。
ここでは名プロデューサーのクリード・テイラーの力を借り、アレンジと曲の提供のボブ・ジェームスほか一流ミュージシャンの参加が目をひく。

The CD was produced by USM Japan and released and distributed by Universal Music LLC; it does not include detailed English liner notes but features a Japanese commentary by Karl Minamizawa and contains six tracks.
The album features a lineup of musicians who are at the forefront of “smooth jazz.”
“Smooth jazz” was first used by American radio stations in the late 1970s and has since become a standard musical term.
Evolving from fusion and crossover, it is characterized by a sophisticated style and a soothing sound that doesn’t interrupt the listener’s activities.
It is also widely used as background music on the radio in Japan.
The performances offer a glimpse of the prototypes for the albums *Wine Light* and *Wine Road*, which were released later.

While the sound reflects the band’s signature style—thanks to the participation of key band members—the addition of Grover Washington Jr.’s soothing saxophone brings a fresh new vibe.
The genre is AOR, which evolved from jazz; because it’s so pleasant to listen to, it was frequently used as background music on TV and radio.
In the late 1970s, the genre known as “smooth jazz” emerged.
It is also said that Grover Washington Jr. coined the term “Quiet Storm.”

The sound is even more urban than the previous album, more refined, and of a higher level of polish.
While rooted in jazz, this soothing easy-listening jazz goes by various names, but here, Grover Washington Jr.’s unique style is what matters most.
Incidentally, vocalist Grady Tate, born January 14, 1932, is a jazz drummer originally from Durham, North Carolina. However, he gained popularity as a singer thanks to his beautiful baritone voice, and on many albums, he is credited as a vocalist rather than a drummer.

The ensemble and vocals, performed by a carefully selected group of seasoned musicians, are the highlights of this album.
