ザ・ブレッカー・ブラザーズ（The Brecker Brothers）は、ランディ・ブレッカーとマイケル・ブレッカー兄弟によるクロスオーバー、ジャズ・フュージョンのバンド、活動期間は１９７４年～２００７年。
兄のランディ・ブレッカー（Randy Brecker 1945年11月27日～）は、アメリカ合衆国ペンシルベニア州生まれのジャズ・トランペット奏者。
弟のマイケル・ブレッカー（Michael Brecker 1949年3月29日～2007年1月13日）は、アメリカ合衆国ペンシルベニア州生まれのジャズ・テナーサックス・ウィンドシンセサイザー奏者。
マイケル・ブレッカーのソロ活動は目覚ましいものがあったが、惜しくも２００７年に急性白血病のため亡くなった。
逝去は世界中の音楽ファンやミュージシャンに大きな喪失感を与えましたが、彼が遺した音楽と功績は、今もなお色褪せることなく輝き続けている。

【Biography】
The Brecker Brothers was a crossover jazz-fusion band formed by brothers Randy Brecker and Michael Brecker; the group was active from 1974 to 2007.
His older brother, Randy Brecker (born November 27, 1945), is a jazz trumpeter born in Pennsylvania, United States.
His younger brother, Michael Brecker (March 29, 1949 – January 13, 2007), was a jazz saxophonist born in Pennsylvania, United States.
Michael Brecker’s solo career was remarkable, but he sadly passed away in 2007 due to acute leukemia.
His passing was a great loss to music fans and musicians around the world, but the music and legacy he left behind continue to shine as brightly as ever.

ランディ・ブレッカーとマイケル・ブレッカーの、まさに人間業とは思えない「超絶ブロウ」。兄弟ならではの一糸乱れぬ高速ユニゾンから、火花を散らすようなソロの応酬まで、聴いているこちらまで息苦しくなるほどのテンションで突っ走る。
更に当時としては画期的だったのが、サックスやトランペットにファズやディレイなどのエフェクターを深くかけた、歪んだエレクトリック・ホーンのサウンド。今では珍しくない手法だが、機材も限られていた時代にはまさに度肝を抜く発想だった。ジャズの管楽器が、ここまでロックの轟音に化けるのか――その衝撃は強烈。
そこへ、テリー・ボジオの嵐のようなドラムが襲いかかる。細かな手数と圧倒的なパワーで猛烈にバンドをプッシュし、ブレッカー兄弟と真正面からぶつかり合う。その様子は、まるで「音のプロレス」。静かに聴かせるタイプのフュージョンではない、ギター、ベース、ドラム、２本のホーンが剥き出しのまま激突する、ハードロックそのものの迫力がある。
特に「Some Skunk Funk」は圧巻。スタジオ版をさらに上回るスピードとテンションで、バンドの持てるエネルギーを一気に爆発させる。バリー・フィナーティの鋭いギターと、ニール・ジェイソンの重厚でファンキーなベースも、この猛烈なサウンドを強力に支えている。
これは単なるジャズ・ロックではない。ジャズが新しい時代へ踏み込んだ瞬間の、熱く激しい鼓動がそのまま音になったような作品だ。もっと聴きたい、もっとこの先を見てみたい――そう思わせるだけに、この後わずか2枚のアルバムを残してブレッカー・ブラザーズが解散してしまうのが、なんとも寂（さび）しい。

Randy Brecker and Michael Brecker’s “superhuman blows” are truly beyond human capability. From the flawless, high-speed unison only brothers could achieve to their electrifying back-and-forth solos, they race forward with such intense energy that it leaves the listener breathless.
What was truly groundbreaking at the time was the distorted electric horn sound—achieved by heavily applying effects like fuzz and delay to the saxophones and trumpets. While this technique is commonplace today, it was a truly mind-blowing concept in an era when equipment was limited. The shock of realizing that jazz wind instruments could transform into such a roaring rock sound was intense.
Then, Terry Bozio’s storm-like drumming sweeps in. With intricate technique and overwhelming power, he fiercely propels the band forward, clashing head-on with the Brecker brothers. It’s like “musical wrestling.” This isn’t the kind of fusion meant to be listened to quietly; it has the raw power of hard rock itself, with the guitar, bass, drums, and two horns colliding in a raw, unfiltered clash.
“Some Skunk Funk” is particularly spectacular. With speed and intensity that surpass even the studio version, it unleashes the band’s energy in one explosive burst. Barry Finerty’s sharp guitar and Neil Jason’s heavy, funky bass also provide powerful support for this ferocious sound.
This is not merely jazz-rock. It’s a work that captures the very hot, intense pulse of the moment when jazz stepped into a new era. It makes you want to hear more and see what comes next—which is precisely why it’s so sad that the Brecker Brothers disbanded after releasing just two more albums.

耳を奪われるのは、圧倒的にタイトなリズムと洗練されたサウンドだ。ドラマーにデニス・チェンバース、ベースにジェームス・ジナス（一部ウィル・リー）を迎えた強力なリズム・セクションが、ソリッドでキレのあるビートを叩き出し、アルバム全体を強烈に引き締めている。
「Heavy Metal Be-Bop」にあった、若さゆえの荒々しさや暴走感はここにはない。兄弟それぞれのソロ活動を経たことで、演奏はより成熟し、楽曲を中心に緻密に組み立てられた「大人のフュージョン」へと進化した。
そこに、９０年代ならではの多彩なサウンドが加わる。従来の１６ビート・ファンクを軸にしながら、アフロやレゲエなどのワールド・ミュージック、ヒップホップ、コンテンポラリー・ジャズまで巧みに取り込み、単なるファンク・アルバムには収まらない広がりを見せる。
更にマイケル・ブレッカーが操るデジタル管楽器「AKAI EWI」が、独特の近未来的な響きを加える。生々しいホーン・サウンドとデジタルな音色が交差し、いかにも９０年代初頭らしいクールな空気を作り出す。
一方で、一部の楽曲に登場する９０年代特有のデジタル・ドラム・プログラミングには、時代を感じるが。それを言ったら時代を時代を聴く「ジャズ・リスナー」の王道から外はず）れる。
ちなみに、アルバムの最後を飾る「Roppongi（六本木）」。これは来日時にランディ・ブレッカーが東京・六本木の街をスケッチして作った曲。ニューヨーク発の兄弟が、東京の街から一曲を生み出しているところにも、このアルバムの変な粋を感じる。

The LP was recorded in August 1992 and released by GRP (GRP) under catalog number GRD-9684. It features 11 tracks. The Brecker Brothers had disbanded in 1982, and each member had pursued solo careers, but they reunited for this release, true to the title *Return of the Brecker Brothers*.
The CD was released by GRP (GRP) and features English track listings and artist profiles, along with a Japanese commentary by Tadashi Narita; it contains 11 tracks.
What captivates the listener is the overwhelmingly tight rhythm and sophisticated sound. The powerful rhythm section—featuring Dennis Chambers on drums and James Genus (with Will Lee on some tracks) on bass—delivers a solid, crisp beat that gives the entire album a powerful, tight structure.
The raw energy and sense of recklessness born of youth found on *Heavy Metal Be-Bop* are absent here. Having each pursued solo careers, the brothers’ playing has matured, evolving into a “mature fusion” meticulously constructed around the compositions.
Added to this is the diverse soundscape unique to the ’90s. While centered on traditional 16-beat funk, the album skillfully incorporates world music such as Afro and reggae, as well as hip-hop and contemporary jazz, showcasing a breadth that goes far beyond a mere funk album.
Furthermore, the “AKAI EWI”—a digital wind instrument played by Michael Brecker—adds a unique, futuristic sound. The interplay between raw horn sounds and digital tones creates a cool atmosphere that is quintessentially early ’90s.
On the other hand, the digital drum programming characteristic of the ’90s, which appears in some tracks, does feel dated. (That said, pointing that out would take you off the beaten path of the “jazz listener” who appreciates music for its era.)
Incidentally, the album closes with “Roppongi.” This is a song Randy Brecker composed after sketching the streets of Roppongi, Tokyo, during a visit to Japan. The fact that these brothers, hailing from New York, created a song inspired by the streets of Tokyo adds to the album’s peculiar charm.
