【略歴】
モンティー・バドウィッグ（Monty Budwig 出生名：Monty Rex Budwig 1926年12月26日～1992年3月9日）はアメリカ合衆国ネブラスカ州ペンダー生まれのジャズ・ベーシスト。
高校時代にベースを始め、１９５１年にはヴィド・ムッソ（Vido Musso）のバンドでプロとしての活動を開始。その後３年間、空軍のバンドで演奏経験を積み、１９５４年にロサンゼルスへ移住。以後、スタジオ・ミュージシャンとして数多くの録音に参加した。
彼が「素晴らしい」と称賛される最大の理由は、ジャズ・ベースに求められる理想的な役割を、極めて高い次元で体現した職人技にある。
最大の魅力は、正確無比な４ビートと、そこから生まれる温かな推進力。メトロノームのように正確なテンポを刻みながらも、決して機械的ではない。一音一音が自然に呼吸し、バンド全体をしなやかに前へ前へと運んでいく。正確さの中に、人間的な温もりと心地よい躍動感にある。
当時のベース・ソロが単調になりがちだった中で、管楽器奏者のようにメロディを「歌う」ソロを得意とした。派手な技巧で自己主張するのではなく、ピアノやサックスなどフロントの音を引き立てながら、その瞬間に最もふさわしい音を選ぶ。「自分が目立つ」のではなく、「音楽全体をより良くする」――その美学を知り尽くしたベーシストだった。
そのスタイルは、東海岸の泥臭く重量感のあるファンキーなジャズとは対照的で、軽快で洗練され、どこかカリフォルニアの明るい陽射しを思わせる、風通しの良いサウンドが特徴。
正確さと温かさ、控えめな自己主張と確かな推進力、その絶妙なバランスこそ、彼が西海岸ジャズで多くのミュージシャンから求められ、引く手あまたの存在となった理由といえる。

【Biography】
Monty Budwig (born Monty Rex Budwig; December 26, 1926 – March 9, 1992) was a jazz bassist born in Pender, Nebraska, United States.
He began playing bass in high school and made his professional debut in 1951 with Vido Musso’s band. He then gained three years of playing experience in an Air Force band before moving to Los Angeles in 1954. From then on, he participated in numerous recordings as a studio musician.
The primary reason he is praised as “wonderful” lies in his craftsmanship, which embodied the ideal role required of a jazz bassist at an exceptionally high level.br>
His greatest appeal lies in his impeccably precise four-beat rhythm and the warm, driving energy it generates. While he keeps the tempo as steady as a metronome, his playing is never mechanical. Each note breathes naturally, smoothly propelling the entire band forward. Within that precision lies a human warmth and a pleasant sense of vitality.
At a time when bass solos tended to be monotonous, he excelled at solos that “sang” melodies like a wind instrument player. Rather than asserting himself with flashy technique, he chose the sound most appropriate for the moment while complementing the front-line instruments, such as the piano and saxophone. “Not standing out” but “making the music as a whole better”—he was a bassist who fully understood that aesthetic.
His style stood in contrast to the gritty, heavy, and funky jazz of the East Coast; it was characterized by a light, refined, and airy sound that was somehow reminiscent of California’s bright sunshine.
It was precisely this exquisite balance—between precision and warmth, understated self-expression and steady drive—that made him a highly sought-after figure among many musicians in West Coast jazz.
